Class 1: Life Skills 2 Learn – Community Communication and Safety Skills

Program Description:

Life Skills 2 Learn: Community Communication and Safety Skills is an inclusive community-based class that is open to participants of all backgrounds and ability levels. The program is designed to support individuals in developing the communication, safety, and independence skills needed to actively participate in their communities.

Participants will engage in hands-on learning experiences in community settings while practicing functional communication, self-advocacy, and community participation skills. Individuals who use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices will be encouraged to use their communication systems to interact with community members, ask questions, request assistance, make choices, and participate in meaningful conversations.

Activities may include visits to community locations, role-playing real-life situations, practicing communication with unfamiliar communication partners, and learning strategies to recognize and respond to safety concerns.

Program Goals

  • Teach participants to identify and respond appropriately to safety issues encountered in the community.
  • Develop and strengthen communication skills across a variety of real-life settings and situations.
  • Support participants in actively engaging in and participating in community activities.
  • Promote self-advocacy, confidence, and independence.
  • Increase familiarity with community resources and environments.
  • Encourage meaningful interactions with peers and community members.

This class is inclusive, accessible, and open to the public. Activities are designed to support participants in building practical skills that foster independence, community integration, and self-determination. This class is educational in nature and is not intended to provide therapeutic, clinical, or habilitation services.

Class 2: Life Skills 2 Learn – Community Money Management and Social Skills

Program Description

Life Skills 2 Learn: Community Money Management and Social Skills is an inclusive community-based class that is open to participants of all backgrounds and ability levels. The program focuses on building confidence, social engagement, financial literacy, and community participation through real-world learning experiences.

Participants will practice social interaction skills, develop confidence in community settings, and learn foundational money management skills. Instruction will include recognizing and handling cash, understanding the purpose of debit and credit cards, making purchases, budgeting concepts, and participating in community activities that support independence. Families and caregivers are encouraged to reinforce and support money management skills outside of class as appropriate.

Activities may include shopping experiences, ordering food, recreational outings, community events, role-playing financial transactions, and opportunities to practice communication and decision-making in real-world environments.

Program Goals

  • Teach and promote social engagement, relationship building, and confidence in community settings.
  • Practice money management skills with support and reinforcement from family members and caregivers.
  • Increase participation and engagement in community activities.
  • Provide instruction on the safe and appropriate use of cash, debit cards, and credit cards during everyday transactions.
  • Teach participants to identify and respond appropriately to safety issues encountered in the community.
  • Promote independence, self-determination, and responsible decision-making.

This class is inclusive, accessible, and open to the public. Classes are led by Becca Eisenberg, a Community Coach with over 25 years of experience supporting individuals with communication, independence, and community participation skills. Becca specializes in helping individuals build confidence, self-advocacy, and practical life skills through meaningful real-world experiences.
