To Those Who Speak…A Message of Love from Father to Son by Luke Adam Hawker is a beautifully lyrical and heartfelt book dedicated to parents of children with complex communication needs. Through beautiful detailed illustrations and deeply moving text, the story captures the journey of a father connecting with his son through many forms of communication, with and without spoken words.

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It offers a powerful and tender representation of sign language and total communication. One particularly meaningful line reads, “Your first word was ‘book,’ not spoken but shaped with your hands. Beyond the pages of books, this new language waited for you.”

At its core, this book is about love, acceptance, and embracing all forms of communication used by nonspeaking children. It is a touching and moving reminder that communication is far more than spoken language, and that meaningful connection can flourish in many different ways.

I would recommend to his book to any parent or caregiver who has a child that struggles with spoken language. When reading this book, you feel like you are on the journey with the author as he navigates the ups and downs of parenting a child with complex communication needs.
