What Stars Are Made Of is a warm, uplifting middle-grade novel that combines science, heart, and real-world challenges.
The main character of the story is 12-year-old Libby Monroe who is a bright and optimistic girl with a passion for science and a curiosity about the universe.
She is born with Turner Syndrome which is a condition that affects how she learns and interacts with others.
When Libby’s older sister, Nonny, announces her pregnancy, Libby’s excitement is also combined with worry about the baby’s health and her family’s financial struggles. Determined to help, she enters a Smithsonian STEM contest with a project honoring Cecilia Payne, the pioneering astronomer who first discovered what stars are made of. She hopes to win the prize and make the world a better place.
