Squint

Squint written by Chad Morris and Shelly Brown is a thoughtful and engaging middle-grade novel that explores friendship, perseverance, and what it truly means to be seen.

The story follows Flint, a 13-year-old aspiring comic book artist who is dealing with a degenerative eye condition that has earned him the nickname “Squint.” As he works tirelessly to finish his comic for an important contest, Flint must also navigate the social challenges of middle school, including bullying, grief, and feeling different from his peers.

When Flint forms an unexpected friendship with McKell, a new student with struggles of her own, the story highlights empathy, connection, and mutual support. The inclusion of Flint’s comic book within the novel adds creativity and depth, giving readers insight into his inner world and imagination. It’s a great middle grade novel to remind young tweens the importance of friendship and being resilient. The book also brings more awareness of the eye disease, Keratoconus.
