the remember balloons

The Remember Balloons written by Jessie Oliveros and illustrated by Dana Wulfekotte is a beautifully written book about dementia.

This heartfelt book is about a boy named James who has many balloons. Each balloon represents a memory. His grandpa has a lot of balloons but as his memory declines and his dementia progresses, he loses more about more balloons. It is now James’ responsibility to share stories.

I love this book because it really helps children understand how memory declines in those diagnosed with dementia. I highly recommend this book to help teach children about this progressive debilitating disease. The representation of the balloons helps children understand and visualize how memory decline.
