I Talk in a Different Way

I Talk in a Different Way written by Briana Schulten is a picture book about a book named Mateo and his communication device. Throughout the book, the reader discovers all of the different ways that Mateo can communicate such as requesting more, answering questions and telling his friends about his weekend. When using AAC, there is often a wait time for an individual to create their message. This takes patience on the part of the communication partner. This “wait time” was representated in the book which causes Mateo to be sad and frustrated. I think this part of the book was something that happens often to those using AAC.

I Talk in a Different Way is a nice representation of AAC and how children with complex communication needs communicate via their device. It’s a great book to add to your AAC classroom library!
