Leo’s Big Feelings Day
Leo’s Big Feelings Day written by Esther Rochelle is a wonderful picture book about overwhelming feelings of frustration, sadness and anger. How does Leo cope with these big feelings?
In this picture book that aligns with social emotional learning, Leo navigates how to cope with these big feelings by learning specific coping skills such as taking deep breathes, listening to the wise owl and talking with his mom. I love how his mom reassures him that all feelings are okay. Some children think that being sad or frustrated is “bad”. This leads to many children not discussing their feelings and being open about them. Part of working towards coping with big feelings is being able to talk about it and also “feel the feeling”. This is also a thoughtful book about teaching children specific emotional vocabulary such as “frustration”, “anger” and “sadness”. What is the difference between these feelings?
