Izzy Can’t Talk

Izzy Can’t Talk written by Jennifer McGee and illustrated by David Diamond is a thoughtful children’s book about life with profound autism. Izzy can’t talk, and he struggles to be understood. Izzy has autism and sometimes it can be difficult for him to communicate because he can’t communicate with his words. Aunt Bee and Uncle Gus want to make Izzy happy and gets his needs met but when they misunderstood what Izzy wants, AAC communication saves the day!

I really liked this book because misunderstanding nonverbal communication is common. That is why it is important to use a total communication approach and have an AAC device to clarify messages and repair communication breakdowns. The fun cartoon visuals make this book enjoyable to read and visually appealing. Izzy Can’t Talk is a wonderful book to have in all libraries to promote inclusivity and differences.
