It’s Called Dyslexia
It’s Called Dyslexia written by Jennifer Moore-Mallinos and Noria Rosa and illustrated by Maria Fabrega is a wonderful resource to help teach children about dyslexia. Sarah, the main character in the story doesn’t enjoy school anymore because reading and writing are so hard! When Sarah gets diagnosed with dyslexia, she feels encouraged when she learns it will just take her longer to learn how to read and write. It doesn’t mean she isn’t smart or can be good at other things!
I like this book because it takes the reader through Sarah’s journey with dyslexia. From frustration with reading to diagnosis and then intervention, Sarah becomes more determined and optimistic as she learns the skills to read with the right strategies. In the back of the book is a parents guide with tips to help your child with dyslexia. There are also two pages with suggested activities such as whisper reading and learning to read recipes.
It’s Called Dyslexia is a inclusive book with a growth mindset. It’s also a wonderful book to read at home or school to build inclusiveness and increase awareness.
