Tenancious…Fifteen Adventures Alongside Disabled Athletes
When researching the topic of adaptive sports, I found this wonderful picture book written by Patty Cisneros Prevo titled Tenancious…Fifteen Adventures Alongside Disabled Athletes. This informative and beautifully illustrated picture book shares the journeys of fifteen athletes with disabilities and relaves the daily jobs and challenges in their lives. I love how the author reviewed a brief history of each athlete and their achievements. The illustrator Dion MBD brings this story to life with his illustrations.
For example, Eli Wolff, who survived a stroke at two years old and as a result had impairments in his left leg and arm. He joined the US Paralymic Soccer Team and uses his experiences to not only enjoy the sport he excelled at but also advocate for others with disabilities. He was the co-director of disability in Sport International which promotes inclusion in sports. Sadly, he passed away in 2023 but leaves a lifetime of achievements. Another athlete, John Register earned NCAA All-American honors in the long jump, high hurdles, and the 4 x 400 meter relay. While training for the Olympicks in 1996, he got injured and needed to have his leg amputed. During he rehabilitation, learned how to walk with a prosthetic legs and discovered the Paralympic Games. The rest is history!
