When Ayden Paints The Sky
When Ayden Paints the Sky is a beautiful picture book written by Celia Botto and illustrated by Samantha Lane Fiddy. When I first saw this cover, I was immediately drawn into the colors and the beautiful artwork. When I found out the author was a special education teacher, I added this book right to my cart! As a speech language pathologist for over 25 years, I highly respect the work of fellow therapists and educators. This inclusive picture book is ideal for all young readers but can really capture the audience of neurodiverse children who have sensory differences.
Ayden Paints The Sky is about a young child who seeks comfort and order when life becomes unpredictable and dysregulating. Throughout the book, Ayden uses paints to express her feelings and find her voice. When looking for a ground color, she choose blue. When her sky is gloomy, she keeps the clouds in place and ties a string around their fluff. When her sky is sunny, she thinks of warm days in the grass without shoes or socks.
This book embraces individuality, neurodiversity and expressing yourself through a variety of modes including art. Ayden Paints The Sky is a beautifully written and illustrated book that should be staple in both classroom and home libraries. I know it will stay in my home library permanently!
