The Room with the Rainbow Door
The Room with the Rainbow Door written by Lucy Perillo and illustrated by Amelia Naomi is an inclusive picture book that should be all classrooms. This picture book follows 5 year old Mac, a student in the class with the rainbow door. Each page features a different student and highlights their different interests and what makes them unique. The author also incorporates strategies used by teachers to help foster acceptance and inclusivity.
In Mac’s classroom are all of his best friends. Meet Foster, who loves chewing on blocks. What does Ms. Lucy do? She gives him a chewy to help with his sensory needs. Maya gets overwhelmed with loud noises and doesn’t like when people cheer for her. Mac gave her a hug to help her feel better. Then there is Carter who uses a “cool tablet” to talk and tell jokes. The illustrations in the book are engaging, inviting and inclusive.
