Free Lunch
Free Lunch
Free Lunch written by Rex Ogle is one of the best-written middle-grade books that I have read in a long time! When I am looking for a book at a bookstore, I believe that books find me, not the other way around! I found Free Lunch in the young reader section at my local Barnes and Nobles Booksellers.
Once I picked up this book, I barely put it down until it was finished. This memoir is a true story of the author, Rex Ogle, and his life at the beginning of 6th grade. Rex’s life was difficult for many reasons. He was living in poverty, had an abusive mother and stepfather, and didn’t get to live his childhood due to constant moving, unstable living environment, and taking care of his younger brother. When reading the book, the reader gets to know younger Rex, who is compassionate, intelligent, vulnerable, and ashamed of his home life. Although the topics are difficult to read (e.g. abuse, poverty), they are important for all children to know about. Rex’s life could be grueling sometimes, but he continues to find the positive light in new relationships and his wonderful connection with his Abuela.
In the back of the book, the author includes a thoughtful discussion guide, a writing guide, and resources for others.
