Our Table

Our Table

Our Table written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds is a masterpiece and a must-have for your home and school library.  This beautiful story reminds us to pause, be mindful, and be grateful for our family and friends.

This beautifully illustrated book begins with a girl named Violet reminiscing about her family dinner at the table. She remembers gathering food together, preparing the table, cooking meals, lighting candles, and sharing memories together. However, these times at the table have become less and less over the past few months with all members of the family being too busy. Violet’s father likes to watch tv, her mom texts on her phone, and her brother is in his room playing video games. Violet starts to feel lonely and longs for those memories of being together at their table. Suddenly, she notices the table that her family used to sit at is shrinking! By the end of the week, the table is teeny tiny.

What will Violet do? She will build her own table again with the help of her family! As she builds the table, Peter Reynolds adds more and more color into the illustrations to show life and happiness in the characters.

This book is a wonderful reminder of slowing down and taking the time to connect with your family. This can be at mealtime or even going out for dinner as a family at a restaurant. Family dinners are very important because it gives us the opportunity to sit and enjoy our meals together. This should be a time without screens including texts, emails, and calls. It makes a huge difference if we make this small change!

I am a very big fan of Peter Reynolds and love his books! Some of my favorites include The Dot, IshGoing Places, Rose’s Garden, Happy Dreamer, and The Water Princess.
