Lila Lou’s Little Library
Lila Lou’s Little Library
Lila Lou’s Little Library A Gift From The Heart written by Nikki Bergstresser and illustrated by Sejung Kim is a heartwarming book about a young girl named Lila Lou who decides to build her own library. The story, which will be released on October 5th by Cardinal Rule Press begins with Lila Lou setting up a fort of books in her house. There are so many books in Lila Lou’s house! What will she do? She decides to get creative by creating her own mini library out of a tree stump and share the books with her friends.
I love this book because it reminds me of my own passion for books! I had so many books at home that I began my own Little Free Library. Now, I get to share my books with my community, which I love doing!
This sweet book reinforces the idea of sharing, literacy, and fostering creativity. Sometimes, we can forget our own creativity when lost in too many to-do lists and activities. I also liked her problem-solving when people don’t initially show up to see her library. Lila Lou is a creative, strong, and bright main character that will keep children engaged in the story.
The other interesting feature of Lila Lou’s Little Library is the incorporation of Spanish vocabulary with the additional glossary in the back of the book. For example, in one scene, the word “azucar” is written on the sugar jar. This can be a great opportunity to teach your child new vocabulary, both English and Spanish.
Other activities include ideas for creating a space for books, choosing books, and going “beyond the book”. This includes ideas of a sharing station, planning special times around the library, and reading through each book together.

Language Activities
There are so many opportunities for language stimulation in the book. Began with the concept of Lila Lou and the number of books. Does Lila Lou have a lot or a little number of books? Why does she have so many books? How does Lila Lou solve her problem of having too many books? What does Lila Lou do when people don’t come to her library? Encourage your child to draw what their library would look like if he/she/they were building one themselves! This is a fun and creative way to get children thinking!
