I Am a Traveler Tour: A Review of I am Jane Goodall

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Jane Goodall

As my readers know, I am very big fan of Brad Meltzer’s wonderful series, Ordinary People Change The World. I am thrilled to be on the I am Traveler Penguin Blog Tour and sharing this information with you today!

I love this series for many reasons. It teaches children that we can all be heroes and to be inspired by the people and world around us. The author has a magical way of presenting more complex information in a simple way so that children of varying ages can learn and be inspired by each biography. I am Jane Goodall is one of my favorite books in this series. I could immediately connect with Jane’s interest in animals and her passion for fulfilling her dream.  When reading this book, both the reader and child will learn about Jane, who is a passionate, dedicated and brave woman. Throughout the story, we learn some fascinating facts about her life such as how she became involved with Dr. Leakey, an anthropologist and paleontologist who helped fulfill the dream of living among the chimpanzees. I am Jane Goodall is a touching and inspiring story, especially the part about how Jane meets David Greybeard. This is a book that should be a part of any school or home library that can help teach our children about following their dreams and taking care our environment. It also teaches others to respect animals around us and appreciate communication among all living creatures. One of the other wonderful discoveries that came out of this book, is our new found love for Dr. Doolittle. Dr. Doolittle was one of Jane’s favorite books, which prompted my children and I to listen to the audio book of Dr. Doolittle, a treasured story about a doctor that lives among the monkeys and dedicates his life to animals.

Language and Learning Tips When thinking about all of the different learning opportunities in the book, I decided to focus on how to read this book to children of varying ages. How would you optimally read this book to children K-2? Before reading the book, give a brief overview of Jane Goodall and her passion for working with animals. As you are reading the book, use various read aloud strategies such as print referencing and highlighting key vocabulary words such as chimpanzee, personality, exploration, etc.
