When I was asked to participate in the book blog tour by Penguin Random House for I Am Gandhi, I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough! This book, I Am Gandhi was different because it was a collaboration and is a graphic biography. As my readers know, I am a huge fan of Brad Meltzer. I love his children’s book series, Ordinary People Change the World. His books are beautifully written and illustrated and leave a true tribute to those people who have truly changed the world.

When I received I Am Gandhi, I was immediately impressed by the unique illustrations and layout of the book. In this book, twenty-five exceptional comic book creators join forces to share the heroic story of Gandhi in this inspiring graphic novel biography. These illustrators include Art Adams, John Cassaday, Jim Cheung, Amanda Connor, Carlos D’Anda, Michael Gaydos, Gene Ha, Stephanie Hans, Bryan Hitch, Phil Jimenez, Siddharth Kotian, David LaFuente, David Mack, Alex Maleev, Francis Manapul, David Marquez, Steve McNiven, Rags Morales, Saumin Patel, Nate Powell, Stephane Roux, Marco Rudy, Kamome Shirahama, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Abhishek Singh.

I Am Gandhi tells the historic and influential biography of a peaceful and inspirational leader who dedicated his life to the civil right movement of equality for all, specifically Indians in South Africa and India. As a young boy, Gandhi was shy and scared of many things. Although he read books constantly, he struggled in school and was often scared of being teased. One of my favorite parts of the book is about Gandhi’s experience with a teacher. When he got his spelling words wrong, his teacher encouraged to copy the words from his peer that was seated next to him. Gandhi’s response was, “In my life, I did not copy others’ work.” This statement really shaped Gandhi’s life because he was a self starter that used his mind and ideas to change the world.

In this graphic biography, Gandhi fought for justice and lead a movement to fight back through peaceful protest. He used these methods in South Africa and India, where he led a nonviolent revolution that freed his country from British rule. The book takes your through his entire life with both his struggles and triumphs. I am Gandhi takes the reader through Ganhi’s biggest accomplishments which included, founding and leading the Natal Indian Congress, introducing the practice of Satyahgrah, founding the Indian Opinion, and leading various marches and fights for equality. What really made this book inspirational is seeing that despite all of his struggles, he never gave up. He just looked inward to find the drive to never give up. What a beautiful message for our children!

At the end of the book is a visual timeline of his life from being born in Porbandar, India to International Day of Nonviolence in Gandhi’s honor on October 2nd, 2007.
